Sponsored by Nuffnang: The Help - film review, plus ticket and book giveaway

Sponsored by Nuffnang

Sensational bestseller, 'The Help', has quite the following - thanks in part to one Ms Oprah Winfrey. Already a fave amongst avid readers, the Big O elevated the book to must-read status the moment she recommended it to her squillions of global viewers in her famed 'book club.'

While the film is not based on a true story, it is most certainly inspired by events of the time. Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (played by Emma Stone, with Oscar talk already buzzing) is a young woman who returns from college determined to be a "writer, or novelist, or both". She does get her wish, but turns her friends' lives upside down - and most of the community - in the process.

Skeeter makes a decision to interview the African American women whose job it is to look after the well-off Southern families - she herself grew up being cared for by 'the help'. Enter Aibileen (played by the sensational Viola Davis), who is Skeeter's friend's housekeeper. She is the first to open up about what happens behind the closed doors of well-to-do families, many of which treat their hired help like, well, crap. And 'crap' ends up becoming quite the motif in the movie... as does food for that matter.

Watching Southern fried chicken being cooked and chocolate pies being whipped up (with a secret ingredient or two) made me crave good-but-bad American food.

Risking her own friendships, Skeeter continues to meet with Aibileen and starts to keep a record of the incredible stories she tells, and soon more women come forward to tell their own stories.

Not surprisingly, unlikely friendships defying the classist and racial norms of the time are forged and new boundaries of what's acceptable behaviour towards hired help are established. The way the relationship between Skeeter and her mother (played by the inimitable Allison Janney) evolves is also heartwarming. Many poignant moments are played out, and for me, the ones that evoked tears were about pregnancy, babies, children, life, and loss.

And the line of the movie, uttered by Aibileen, to her young charge ("You is kind, you is smart, you is important") is one many will repeat to their own children.

Josie's Juice has three double passes to give away to see the movie, as well as three copies of the novel 'The Help'. All you need to do to be in the running to win a double pass and a copy of the book is tell us about a moment you stood up for something you believed in. Write your answer in the comments section just below.

Competition closes Friday September 9, 2011.

The Help is in cinemas now.

2011 DHL Fashion Export Scholarship finalists announced

The 2011 DHL Fashion Export Scholarship finalists have been announced

DHL - the world's leading logistics company - is behind this exciting comp, and has just announced the three talented finalists of the annual DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship.

In its second year, the Scholarship aims to identify Australia’s emerging fashion talent and assist them in achieving international business growth.

The 2011 DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship finalists are:

Evening wear fave, Rachel Gilbert:

“Rachel has shown a strong brand presence within just a few years. This bright young talent is the one to watch and has a huge future ahead of her,” said Lucia Labbate from IMG Fashion.

We Are Handsome, by designers Indrha Chagoury and Jeremy Somers:

“Indrha and Jeremy have an impressive export strategy backed up by unique prints and designs,” said Jamila Dlala, Global Multi-National Customer Manager from DHL Express Australia.

And Ellery designer, Kym Ellery:

“Ellery’s designs are absolutely impeccable and beautifully crafted. She has the persistence and attitude to last in this competitive industry,” said Nicola Finetti, one of Australia’s brilliant fashion designers.

The comp is judged by the three identies above - Jamila, Lucia, and Nicola - and the Scholarship received a number of high calibre entries proving there is an emerging talent pool of Australian designers that have the business acumen to succeed overseas.

“We looked at the key categories of design, marketing, business and export and were incredibly impressed by these three talented designers. Not only do they have a unique and creative flair for design, they have a strong business sense and direction to cement themselves in both the domestic and international markets,” said Jamila.

The 2011 DHL Fashion Export Scholarship is open to Australian fashion exporters who have been exporting for less than four years. The winner will receive a tailored export mentoring program and international freight to the value of $10,000 from DHL Express.

DHL is also the official logistics partner of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, and has been committed to Australia’s fashion industry and helping designers achieve international success for eons.

Today, DHL's international network links more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, and offers exceptional expertise in express, air and ocean freight, overland transport, contract logistics solutions as well as international mail services.

Last year's DHL Fashion Export Scholarship winners, Australian fashion label Bec & Bridge, has already captured the attention of global buyers including international online store Shopbop. Their current Autumn/Winter collection has been worn by Hilary Duff, Nicky Hilton and Hellcats star Heather Hemmens.

Australia’s premier activewear label has begun a search for the national Lorna Jane fashion ambassador

In line with Lorna Jane's new May campaign, Modern Muse: It's Chic To Be Fit, the winner will represent the brand’s message, with the chosen finalist receiving a six month initial contract to join the Lorna Jane team as an 'Active Fashion Ambassador' travelling the nation to report on all things active, with the added bonus of an attractive salary - plus, a $5000 cash prize!

Founder and Head Designer, Lorna Jane Clarkson, says, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for one lucky individual; to be selected as the official Lorna Jane muse and ambassador is a fantastic achievement and shows you are the kind of active woman that Lorna Jane represents.”

The competition winner will be required to travel across Australia, and tasked with promoting active living in communities throughout the country and encouraging them to “Activate Their Lives”.

Sporting the latest Lorna Jane styles through a generous $1000 monthly wardrobe allowance, the new ambassador will attend exclusive fashion and fitness events, recording their experiences along the way and writing about them for the Lorna Jane Blog. They will also have access to a Lorna Jane company vehicle, a monthly travel budget... and an unforgettable experience.

Entrants are required to submit a video application explaining why they should be Lorna Jane’s modern muse and why they would make the best ambassador for the brand.

Competition details are listed on www.lornajane.com/modernmuse and due to a high volume of applications expected, only video applications will be accepted. There will be five open auditions taking place at selected stores around the country where they will be a video booth for entrants to make a short film. These applications, plus the online entries, will be judged by a Lorna Jane panel following the competition closing date and five finalists will be selected. The five successful applications will then be available to view on the site and the public will get to vote for the winner.

Key criteria for the winning applicant include being social media savvy, possessing a passion for writing or having previous blog writing experience, and above all being passionate about the Lorna Jane brand as well as living actively and helping others to the same. Lorna Jane is looking for a personality with a contagious and uplifting spirit, a natural go-getter who is determined to live life to the fullest and someone who will ‘never, never, never give up’.

Lorna Jane Clarkson will be part of the judging panel and is eager to identify the winner, “the successful candidate will have all the credentials that the Lorna Jane brand represents – an active and healthy lifestyle, a positive outlook, great style and the ability to work her Lorna Jane wardrobe for any occasion. We know this individual is out there and we are excited to find out who she is.”

Some interesting facts about Fiji water: it's bottled in Fiji, far from pollution, acid rain or industrial waste. Fiji Water's aquifer is in a virgin ecosystem at the edge of a primitive rainforest. In fact, Fiji Water is an artesian water that comes from a source deep within the earth, protected by layers of clay and rock, in the remote Yaqara Valley of Viti Levu, Fiji island.

Fiji Water begins as rainfall filtering through layers of ancient volcanic rock over hundreds of years gathering silica. Silica is an essential mineral for the human body that may help strengthen bones, connective tissue, teeth, skin, nails, nails and hair. Silica is what gives the soft taste to the Fiji Water.

The brand is committed to reducing the amount of packaging they use to make their products by at least 20%, and to reducing manufacturing waste at the Fiji bottling facility by 33%.

Morphsuit-wearing men unite! It's Mr Morph 2011

Morphsuit-wearing men will compete to be crowned Mr Morph 2011.

What, you ask? Read on.

The contest will be judged solely on talent and answers, not looks (although body shape could come in to play!). Contestants will compete in two categories, talent and questions and answer.

To be held at the Coogee Bay Hotel, Corner Coogee Bay Rd and Arden St, Coogee, where heat 1 will be at 3pm, on Saturday on 26 February, 2011.

The Morphsuit covers the whole body (even the head), you can breathe through them, see through them and even drink through them (I've been told some have even tried to pee in them... of course they have!) and Australians are the biggest buyers of Morphsuits per capita in the world. Clearly, the search for Mr Morph had to begin here.

“We all know how fun it is to dress up, but we’re taking this to a whole new level,” says Morphsuit co-inventor Fraser Smeaton. “Morphsuits are all about having fun and being noticed. So the person crowned Mr Morph has to do just that.”

There are about 100,000 morphs running around the globe (imagine them all in one place... Yikes!), and more than 480,000 Morphsuits fans on Facebook; sharing pics, videos and ideas of what to do in your Morphsuit.

Namely: surfing, sinking a few VBs at the cricket, sky-diving, playing footy, marathons and bungee jumping - just some of the things people have done in a Morphsuit.

Morphsuits are available in sizes M - XXL and in 29 colours and designs. The suits (as well as accessories like wigs, glasses, sweatbands and shoe covers) are available for purchase at http://www.morphsuits.com.au/. Morphsuit prices range from $75 to $85.

For more information go to http://www.morphsuis.com.au/ or www.facebook.com/morphsuits

You have been warned... and for these keen to embrace it all, head to the comp next Saturday!
