Big Mamma's Boy - social commentary, wog-style

One look at the new Aussie movie Big Mamma's Boy - released July 28, 2011 - and I'm in.

Sure, it looks a little madcap, features ethnic comedy, and stars Maria Venuti - and therefore may not appeal to everyone - but I am really loving the central theme. It sheds light on the fact that some [well and truly grown up] kidults are still living at home with their parents.

Thing is, most of the Western world is experiencing this phenomenon, too... except each country has now coined a fancy word for it.

See: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/family/8474569/Stay-at-home-kids-a-worldwide-phenomenon.html

In Spain they call them "generation ni-ni".

In England, they're calling them 'KIPPERS', an acronym for "kids in parents' pockets eroding retirement savings".

In the US, it has been dubbed the "full nest syndrome" and in Australia, adults coming back to live in the family home are called "boomerangers."

In Italy, they call them "bamboccioni" – or big babies. At the end of this blog post, check out a fascinating US 60 Minutes story on the "mammoni" of Italy.

In the case of Big Mamma's Boy, the central character hasn't left home the first time around. The film follows the story of Rocco (Frank Lotito) as he struggles to choose between his new love, Katie (Holly Valance) and his stereotypical, over-protective Italian mother (Carmelina Di Guglielmo). In real life, I'd probably tell Katie to run. Fast.

Big Mamma's Boy also stars George Kapiniaris, Costas Kilias, Steve Mouzakis, and Jim Russell, and the film introduces the stunning Pia Miller in her first film role, with an appearance and exclusive song from Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci.

Dubbed "A comedy about life, love and lasagna", it may not win an Oscar but will certainly provide much relatable humour to wogs and comfy kidults alike. Go see it.
